Igbasan-led initiative targets vulnerable residents, promotes volunteerism
More than 1,000 people have benefited from an ongoing community intervention organised by the APC Youth Network West Africa as the group concluded the eighth consecutive week of its humanitarian outreach in Lagos.
The latest exercise took place at the organisation’s secretariat in Agidingbi, Ikeja, where residents received food items and other forms of assistance.
The initiative, led by the Director-General of the APC Youth Network West Africa, DG Olatunde Gideon Igbasan, is focused on providing regular support to vulnerable members of society.
Organisers said the weekly programme is also designed to promote compassion, volunteerism and social responsibility among young people.
The outreach has nevertheless generated questions about whether it is connected to political activities, given the political environment in the country.
But His Royal Highness, Dr. Oluwamayowa Jose, the Alaye, said the programme should not be interpreted as a campaign activity.
He explained that the intervention had been running continuously for eight weeks and was established as a community support initiative.
“Its purpose is simple—to support people, give back to society and put smiles on the faces of those in need,” the traditional ruler said.
He maintained that community service should remain separate from political considerations, arguing that helping vulnerable people should be regarded as a responsibility that extends beyond election periods.
The eighth edition witnessed a large turnout as residents gathered at the secretariat to participate in the distribution exercise.
Volunteers and members of the organising team worked to ensure an orderly process as beneficiaries received their allotted support.
According to the organisers, the growing attendance at successive editions underscores the importance of grassroots initiatives capable of responding directly to the needs of communities.
They said the programme would continue in the coming weeks, with plans to expand its impact beyond the areas currently covered.
