The Director-General of the Delta State Bureau for Orientation and Communications, Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, has said journalists remain important partners in the state’s development process under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

Oghenesivbe stated this while receiving the Chairman of the Delta State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Churchill Oyovwe, who visited the Bureau to identify with the ongoing Phase Two of the Drug-Free DELTA campaign.

The initiative is targeting selected colleges and tertiary institutions across Delta State’s three senatorial districts.

The Bureau DG commended the NUJ leadership and members for what he described as professional reportage of government programmes, policies and achievements since the Oborevwori administration assumed office on May 29, 2023.

He urged journalists to continue to uphold professional and ethical standards while maintaining their constitutional responsibility to hold government and society accountable.

Oghenesivbe described the relationship between the Bureau and the Delta NUJ as cordial and mutually beneficial.

He said the Bureau would continue to support initiatives aimed at deepening cooperation between government communication agencies and the media.

According to him, Governor Oborevwori’s support for the NUJ reflects his appreciation of the role of journalists in promoting public awareness, good governance and development.

He cited the Governor’s donation of a power-generating set to the NUJ Secretariat in 2023 and the recent provision of a new Toyota bus to enhance the union’s operational and logistical activities.

Oyovwe Supports Drug-Free DELTA Initiative

Oyovwe said his visit was specifically intended to identify with the Bureau’s ongoing campaign against drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking.

He said the reported increase in drug abuse, as highlighted by the NDLEA, made collaboration among government, the media, civil society and relevant agencies imperative.

The NUJ chairman commended the Delta State Government for its efforts to tackle drug abuse and illicit trafficking in partnership with the NDLEA.

He promised that the state council would use its various media platforms to support the Drug-Free DELTA campaign and promote awareness among young people and the general public.
