The Labour Party has used Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary to call on citizens to remain hopeful in the country and consider its candidates in the forthcoming general elections.

The party made the call in an Independence Day message signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, on September 30, 2026.

The Labour Party said while Nigeria had experienced several challenges since independence, the country’s continued existence as one nation remained an important achievement.

It acknowledged the economic and security difficulties confronting citizens, as well as what it described as missed opportunities and unfulfilled expectations over the years.

The party, however, urged Nigerians not to surrender hope, arguing that citizens have a responsibility to demand accountability from those entrusted with public office.

According to the LP, meaningful change requires citizens to remain actively engaged rather than giving in to resignation or despair.

The party said it had fielded candidates for various positions, from the presidential contest to state assembly elections, describing them as competent and credible.

It urged Nigerians facing economic and other challenges to “look in the direction of the Party,” presenting the Labour Party as an alternative political platform.

The party also pointed to Abia State Governor Alex Otti, a member of the Labour Party, as an example of its experience in governance.

The LP said Otti’s administration had strengthened its confidence in the party’s ability to translate its promises into governance.

It described the governor as a source of pride to the party and urged Nigerians seeking political change to examine the records of its candidates.

Beyond electoral politics, the Labour Party called on all public office holders to prioritise citizens’ welfare and govern with empathy, justice and transparency.

The party said no country could achieve meaningful development without placing the welfare and wellbeing of its citizens at the centre of governance.

“As Nigeria marks 66 years of independence, the Labour Party reaffirms its faith in the Nigerian people and in the capacity of our nation to overcome its present challenges and fulfil its enormous potential,” the statement said.

The party concluded by wishing Nigerians a happy 66th Independence Anniversary.
