A mammoth crowd on Friday welcomed the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate for the Kogi East Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections, Alhaji Idris Hussein Kashim, popularly known as Idris HK, as he returned to the senatorial district for a fresh round of humanitarian activities, community engagement and political consultations.
Idris HK arrived in Idah before proceeding to Igalamela-Odolu Local Government Area, where he was received by supporters, community leaders, youth organisations and political stakeholders who gathered to identify with his senatorial ambition.
The homecoming featured solidarity from several groups, including the Aminu Flow Football Academy, Ajaka, the Idris HK Canvassers Movement, women and youth associations and other grassroots organisations.

Supporters described the turnout as an indication of growing interest in Idris HK’s political aspiration ahead of the 2027 Kogi East Senatorial election.
The SDP candidate also paid homage to traditional rulers, including the Ettemahi of Ajaka, as part of his traditional and community engagements in his home area.
At the party council office, political stakeholders expressed support for his candidacy and said his return had provided an opportunity to address what they described as doubts and rumours surrounding his political plans.
The stakeholders, according to reports from the meeting, assured Idris HK of their support while expressing confidence in his ability to mobilise support across the senatorial district.
‘I Am Not Contesting for Personal Gain’ — Idris HK
Addressing the gathering, Idris HK said his decision to contest the Kogi East Senate seat was not motivated by personal ambition or the pursuit of wealth.
He said he was seeking public office because the challenges confronting the region had become too extensive for him to tackle through personal resources alone.
According to him, he had been blessed with sufficient resources to provide for himself and his family, but believed that a political platform would provide the institutional capacity needed to address broader development challenges.
“I am not contesting for my selfish interest. God has already provided for me and my family. I am contesting because I want to rescue our region, because my personal resources cannot handle all the changes we are facing in the land.”
Idris HK has previously described his political agenda as being focused on infrastructure, youth empowerment, education, healthcare, economic development and grassroots representation.
Humanitarian Interventions Take Centre Stage
His humanitarian activities have become a prominent part of his public profile in Kogi East, with reported interventions covering electricity infrastructure, transformers, solar-powered street lights, boreholes, scholarships, medical support, road rehabilitation and youth empowerment.
The Nation reported in May that Idris HK had picked the SDP expression-of-interest and nomination forms to contest the Kogi East Senatorial seat and highlighted several of his community interventions, including scholarships, medical outreach programmes, borehole projects, youth empowerment initiatives and electricity-related interventions.
One of the major projects associated with him is the privately funded electrification initiative in Ankpa and other parts of Kogi East. Reports indicate that the project is aimed at addressing prolonged electricity challenges in affected communities.
His foundation has also been linked to electricity interventions in communities across the district, including transformer donations and other infrastructure projects.
Supporters have described the scale of some of these interventions as significant, while Idris HK has consistently framed his approach as an attempt to demonstrate community service before seeking elective office.
Focus on Grassroots Development
The candidate’s political message has increasingly centred on grassroots development, youth empowerment, infrastructure, economic opportunity and service-oriented representation.
Friday’s activities therefore combined political consultations with community engagement as Idris HK moved through Idah and Igalamela-Odolu, reconnecting with traditional institutions, party structures, youth organisations, community leaders and grassroots supporters.
For his supporters, the large turnout represented more than a homecoming ceremony. They viewed it as a demonstration of support for a candidate whose humanitarian interventions, they argued, had already created a basis for his campaign message.
With political activities gathering momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, Idris HK’s return to Kogi East and the reception he received are expected to add to ongoing political discussions across the nine local government areas that make up the senatorial district.
The 2027 Kogi East Senate contest is expected to feature candidates from several political parties, making community engagement, policy messaging and grassroots mobilisation important components of the emerging campaign landscape.
