The Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has declared that political prominence, former public office and political ambition do not confer immunity from lawful regulatory enforcement.
The party made the position while reacting to comments attributed to Senator Ovie Omo-Agege over the sealing of the business premises of Amb. Tobore Alex Agbah by the Ughelli North Local Government Council.
In a statement signed by State Publicity Secretary Valentine Onojeghuo, Esq., the APC said it was unacceptable to portray a local government regulatory action as political persecution without first establishing that the action was unlawful.
The party said it was particularly concerned by alleged references to the enforcement as “political gangsterism” and “executive rascality.”
According to the APC, the appropriate response where an individual believes a government action is unlawful is to challenge it through available legal and administrative channels.
The party also maintained that the right to participate in political activities does not automatically exempt an individual or business from regulatory requirements.
Delta APC said the same standards should apply to members and supporters of the APC, NDC, PDP and other political organisations.
The party further questioned the authority of Omo-Agege to issue directives or warnings to the chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Council concerning the council’s official responsibilities.

It said local government administration should be allowed to operate within the limits of the law without undue political interference.
The APC therefore urged the Ughelli North chairman to remain focused on his statutory responsibilities while ensuring that affected persons are given access to lawful remedies.
The party concluded by reaffirming its commitment to lawful grassroots governance.
