The Director-General of the Delta State Bureau for Orientation and Communications, Dr Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, has urged youths in the state to embrace creativity, innovation, education, entrepreneurship and leadership development to achieve personal growth and contribute meaningfully to society.

Oghenesivbe gave the charge during the 2026 International Youth Day (IYD) celebration organised by the Delta State Ministry of Youth Development at Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba.

He called on young people to pursue purposeful ambitions, cultivate discipline, commit to continuous learning and transform their talents into productive ventures that would promote self-reliance and economic growth.

According to him, the 2026 International Youth Day theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” reflects the shared aspirations of young people across different communities and countries for quality education, decent employment, meaningful participation in decision-making and a sustainable future.

The Bureau chief said the annual celebration should go beyond ceremonial activities to address the challenges facing young people and promote greater investment in skills acquisition, digital inclusion, innovation and economic empowerment.

He also challenged youths to reject the perception that education is a scam, stressing that formal education, vocational training, digital competence and practical experience remain important pathways to self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods.

Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda Focuses on Youth Development

Oghenesivbe said the Delta State Government, under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, remained committed to youth development through its MORE Agenda, which prioritises Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security.

He explained that the agenda’s emphasis on human capital development, enterprise support and skills acquisition was designed to expand opportunities for young people and equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in a changing economy.

At the national level, he acknowledged youth-focused initiatives under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly programmes that connect education, digital skills, technical training and entrepreneurship with emerging economic opportunities.

He specifically highlighted the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which provides financial assistance to eligible students pursuing higher education.

The Bureau chief stressed the need to translate government policies and programmes into tangible benefits for young people, enabling them to acquire marketable skills, establish businesses, secure decent employment and contribute to national economic growth.

He encouraged eligible youths to take advantage of available empowerment programmes and apply their knowledge and talents to solving problems within their communities.

Oghenesivbe Cites Oborevwori’s Leadership Journey

Oghenesivbe urged Delta youths to remain focused on their ambitions, noting that responsible leadership requires perseverance, discipline, public service and continuous personal development.

He cited Governor Oborevwori’s progression from community leadership in Osubi to Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly and subsequently governor as an example of how experience, commitment and public service can prepare individuals for greater leadership responsibilities.

He encouraged young people to participate actively in civic affairs, community development and legitimate democratic processes, including politics, where they could contribute ideas and influence decisions affecting their future.

According to him, youth participation in governance is essential to building inclusive institutions and ensuring that the aspirations of younger generations are reflected in public policies and development programmes.

DG Advises Youths on Responsible Use of Social Media

On digital engagement, Oghenesivbe urged young people to use social media platforms to promote creativity, entrepreneurship, positive community initiatives and credible information.

He cautioned against misinformation, cyberbullying and divisive online content, advising youths to embrace responsible digital engagement.

He added that digital platforms should serve as tools for learning, innovation, public enlightenment and constructive engagement rather than channels for spreading false information or creating unnecessary divisions.

Former Commissioner Urges Youths to Serve Society

Earlier, the immediate past Commissioner for Youth Development, Trakiriowei Harry ThankGod, who is now the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Patani State Constituency, urged Delta youths to deploy their talents and abilities in the service of the state, Nigeria and humanity.

Trakiriowei commended Governor Oborevwori for his commitment to youth development, empowerment and human capacity building.

He noted that sustained investment in young people remained important to building a prosperous and inclusive society, urging youths to take advantage of opportunities that could improve their skills and prepare them for leadership and productive engagement.

The event attracted young people from Delta State’s three senatorial districts, including political appointees responsible for youth development.

The celebration underscored the importance of collaboration between government and young people in expanding opportunities, nurturing talent, promoting innovation, strengthening democratic governance and advancing sustainable development.

It also reinforced calls for young people to take an active role in shaping their future through education, entrepreneurship, responsible citizenship and continuous self-development.
