As political conversations gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, Senator Sunday Steve Karimi’s record of constituency interventions in Kogi West is drawing attention to the role of legislative representation in addressing economic hardship, educational needs and infrastructure deficits.

The senator’s interventions cover women’s economic empowerment, student bursaries, agricultural support, employment facilitation, road construction, water supply, electricity and healthcare.

The programmes, as outlined by his supporters, are designed to improve livelihoods across the seven local government areas of Kogi West Senatorial District. Their long-term impact, however, will depend on sustained implementation, transparent beneficiary selection and the ability of projects to deliver lasting benefits to residents.

Women’s Empowerment: ₦100 Million for Cooperative Societies

Women’s economic empowerment is one of the major components of the reported intervention package.

Under the initiative, 50 women’s cooperative societies reportedly received ₦2 million each, amounting to ₦100 million in revolving business capital, following business training. The programme was reported to have commenced with Kabba/Bunu and Ijumu beneficiaries.

The initiative is intended to help women expand small businesses, strengthen cooperative enterprises and improve household incomes.

Other empowerment items include tricycles, popularly known as Keke, grinding machines, sewing machines and start-up grants for youths, artisans and small-business operators.

The interventions are aimed at providing beneficiaries with practical tools to generate income rather than depend entirely on limited employment opportunities.

Education: ₦700 Million Bursary Across Three Editions

Education support represents another major area of the senator’s reported constituency interventions, with a combined ₦700 million announced or allocated across three bursary editions between 2024 and 2026.

In 2024, the programme provided ₦100 million to 1,000 students from Kogi West, with each beneficiary receiving ₦100,000.

In 2025, the bursary programme expanded to ₦300 million for 3,000 students across the three senatorial districts of Kogi State. The reported distribution comprised 1,390 students from Kogi West, 1,000 from Kogi East and 610 from Kogi Central.

Another ₦300 million bursary programme was announced for 2026, with applications reportedly opened in August.

If fully implemented as outlined, the three editions would amount to ₦700 million in student support.

Beyond financial assistance, Karimi’s reported education interventions include a computer-based test (CBT) centre at Titcombe College, Egbe, and examination-related assistance.

The bursary programme is intended to ease the financial pressure on students and their families amid rising tuition-related expenses, accommodation costs and the general cost of living.

Agricultural Support for Farmers Across Seven LGAs

Farmers across the seven local government areas of Kogi West — Lokoja, Kogi, Kabba/Bunu, Ijumu, Mopamuro, Yagba East and Yagba West — are also listed among the beneficiaries of the senator’s reported empowerment initiatives.

The interventions reportedly include fertilisers, farm inputs, sprayers, seedlings and agricultural training.

The support is particularly relevant to farmers grappling with rising production costs following the removal of the petrol subsidy and the resulting pressure on transportation and farm-input prices.

The senator has also reportedly worked to connect farmers with federal agricultural programmes, extension services and funding opportunities across agricultural value chains.

Such measures could help improve productivity and strengthen rural livelihoods if beneficiaries receive the necessary inputs on time and have access to markets for their produce.

Roads and Employment: Returning Contractors to Abandoned Projects

Infrastructure development and employment facilitation also feature prominently in the list of reported interventions.

One of the major road projects associated with Karimi’s representation is the Kabba–Egbe–Ilorin Road, for which he reportedly facilitated an initial ₦2 billion intervention and an additional ₦6 billion to support the return of the contractor after about 11 years of abandonment.

The road is strategically important to communities and commuters who depend on it for transportation, trade and access to neighbouring areas.

Karimi is also credited by his supporters with personally facilitating the reconstruction of Pakuta Bridge, which links Aiyegunle-Gbede and Kiri Kingdom.

On employment, the senator’s reported interventions include facilitating opportunities for Kogi West youths in federal ministries, departments and agencies, paramilitary services and teaching positions.

The extent of the employment placements and the completion status of the road projects would benefit from further public documentation to enable residents to assess the outcomes.

Water Projects: Boreholes Across Communities

Access to potable water remains a major concern in several communities across Kogi West, making borehole projects an important component of constituency development.

The interventions include 85 solar-powered boreholes, described as providing one facility per ward, alongside 75 additional boreholes and the rehabilitation of 60 existing facilities.

In August 2026, another 22 motorised boreholes were announced for Lokoja, with five industrial boreholes also planned for the state capital.

If delivered and properly maintained, the projects could reduce the distance residents travel to obtain water and ease the burden on households, particularly women and children.

However, the number of operational facilities, their locations and maintenance arrangements remain important measures for assessing the programme’s effectiveness.

Electricity: Transformers and Solar Streetlights

Power infrastructure is another area covered by the reported interventions.

More than 32 transformers have reportedly been supplied or facilitated for communities and institutions, including Sarki Noma, Mount Patti, Obajana, Cantonment, Madabo and Offege-Baptist.

The list includes reported 500kVA transformers for the Cantonment and Madabo areas.

In addition, more than 500 solar-powered streetlights have reportedly been installed or provided across 62 communities.

The interventions are intended to improve electricity distribution, enhance security and support commercial activities, although their impact depends on installation, functionality and maintenance.

Free Coastal Bus Service Eases Transportation Costs

In Lokoja, the Coastal Bus free-ride initiative is another programme associated with the senator’s constituency interventions.

The service operates along the Zango–Nataco Junction route, providing free transportation for workers, students of the Federal University Lokoja and Kogi State Polytechnic, artisans and other residents.

The initiative is presented as a means of reducing daily transportation expenses, particularly for people whose livelihoods depend on regular movement within the state capital.

Its non-partisan character is also intended to make the service accessible to residents regardless of political affiliation.

Healthcare: Cottage Hospital and Medical Outreach

Healthcare interventions listed among Karimi’s reported activities include the establishment of a cottage hospital at Edu-Kakanda, upgrades to primary healthcare centres and free medical outreach programmes.

Such interventions are particularly relevant to rural communities where access to healthcare facilities, medical personnel and essential services can be difficult.

The sustainability of the projects will depend on the availability of healthcare workers, equipment, medicines and adequate funding for operations.

2027 Agenda: Federal University of Agriculture, Medical University

Looking ahead to 2027, Karimi’s supporters say the senator intends to pursue more strategic federal projects if returned to the Senate.

Among the proposed priorities is the Federal University of Agriculture, Kabba, for which a bill has reportedly passed the legislative stage and is awaiting presidential assent.

Another proposal is a medical university in Egbe, alongside plans for additional CBT centres and efforts to attract more federal projects to the district.

The senator’s reported ambition to move from lobbying for projects to securing a principal Senate leadership position is also being presented as part of the argument for continuity in representation.

However, the proposed institutions and leadership ambitions remain subject to the relevant legislative, executive and political processes.

Representation Under Scrutiny as 2027 Approaches

As the 2027 election cycle approaches, the range of reported interventions associated with Senator Sunday Steve Karimi provides a basis for examining the relationship between constituency projects and the everyday needs of Kogi West residents.

For supporters, the programmes demonstrate an approach to representation that combines financial empowerment with infrastructure development and access to public services.

For residents and other stakeholders, the key questions are whether the projects have been completed, how many people have benefited, whether the facilities remain functional and how transparently public resources have been deployed.

Ultimately, the measure of representation extends beyond announcements and allocations to verifiable outcomes that improve the lives of constituents.

As the political season develops, the public assessment of Karimi’s record is likely to revolve around the delivery, accessibility and sustainability of the interventions attributed to his office.
