Indiscriminate demolition, land encroachment, threat to Gbagyi culture – FCT commissioner

The commissioner for Public Complaints Commission (PCC) representing the FCT, Mr Ezikel Dalhatu Musa, said the indiscriminate of demolition of the ancestral homes of the FCT natives by government and land grabbing by developers as a threat hovering around the Gbagyi’s culture in the territory.

Musa, who spoke as a guest speaker at the seventh annual Gbagyi cultural festival in Karu, Abuja on Monday, said the Gbagyi race is at a cross road, saying as a major of tribes in the FCT, there was need to set a pace in order for others to follow.

“But we can’t do or achieve this stride without realigning with our culture, even as incredible feats have been reached and can be attained using our culture,” he said.

He added “we saw how Moses, Joshua, Aaron, Noah and so a other great men used culture to deliver their people into greatness, even the modern tradition we are trying to imbibe today are still actively practicing their own culture and known to be promoting their traditions, “he said.

He, however, called on the government to address the avalanche injustice against natives of the FCT, through creating a development commission, that will cater for the indigenous people of the territory as well as preserve their culture.

Earliar, the Sa’Karuyi of Karu chiefdom, HRH Emmanuel Kyauta Yepwi, said the Gbagyi cultural festival is organized annually to showcase the real Gbagyi culture and their traditions.

He added that the cultural festival will also foster peace and unity among not only the Gbagyi people but other tribes in his chiefdom.

The monarch, however, noted that the Gbagyi’s culture and traditions are gradually going into extinction due to the world global technology.
