Two Sudan paramilitary generals face UN sanctions for key roles in war against military

By Yahaya Idris

The United Nations Security Council imposed sanctions on Friday against two generals in Sudan’s paramilitary force, who played key roles in the conflict with the military, characterized by ethnically motivated attacks and atrocities.

In mid-April 2023, Sudan descended into conflict as tensions between military and paramilitary leaders in Khartoum and other regions, including Darfur, boiled over, leaving over 14,000 people dead and 33,000 injured, with the U.N. warning of an impending famine.

The council’s sanctions committee has included Maj. Gen. Osman Mohamed Hamid Mohamed, head of Rapid Support Forces’ operations department, and Maj. Gen. Abdel Rahman Juma Barkalla, RSF commander in West Darfur, on the sanctions blacklist.
