Addis Ababa airport could be the world’s largest
Ethiopia is developing a massive new airport, expected to become Africa’s largest and one of the busiest airports worldwide.
The Mega Airport City project, valued at £5 billion, will be constructed near Bishoftu in central Ethiopia, roughly 25 miles from the capital city of Addis Ababa.
The airport anticipates welcoming up to 110 million passengers annually.
The development project, a collaboration between Ethiopian Airlines and Dar Al-Handasah Consultants, includes the construction of a state-of-the-art terminal and four runways, with an expected completion date of 2029.
Addis Ababa’s current airport, Bole International, ranks among the world’s highest, situated 2,334 meters above sea level.
The new facility intends to mitigate congestion at Bole and reinforce Ethiopia’s burgeoning role in global aviation.

The “Mega Airport City” project is part of Ethiopia’s broader plans to boost its economy and position itself as a key hub for air travel in Africa. The airport will also help the country attract more international business and tourism.
The airport could potentially rival major global hubs like Dubai and Heathrow once operational.
