4 million Johannesburg residents to face water cut this weekend
This weekend, Johannesburg is set to experience significant water cuts affecting up to four million residents due to essential maintenance at pump stations.
The disruptions are part of broader efforts by water authorities to manage supply amidst ongoing shortages and infrastructure challenges. Residents have previously protested against water outages, with some areas lacking supply for over 70 days.
Johannesburg Water is implementing measures to reduce consumption and address leaks, which account for about 40% of the city’s water loss.
As many as four million Johannesburg residents could be left high and dry over this long weekend as water parastatals embark on a marathon maintenance project.
With a day to go before the 86-hour shutdown of the Eikenhof pump station and 36-hour maintenance on the Zwartkopjes pump station, Johannesburg residents have been warned to expect low pressure or no water at all in areas fed by those Rand Water stations.
The Rand Water pump station pumps purified water from the bulk supplier to two-thirds of Johannesburg’s CBD, Deep South, and West.
