As a resident of Okene, Kogi State, I have had the opportunity to witness firsthand the transformative impact of Alhaji Yahaya Bello’s administration as Executive Governor of Kogi State from 2016-2024. His leadership has been instrumental in restoring the pride of the Ebira people in their cultural heritage. Unlike in the past when we were reluctant to disclose our middle names outside Okene, we can now proudly assert our identity. Yahaya Bello’s administration has fostered a sense of unity and progress, allowing us to hold our heads high as Egbira people.
Prior to Yahaya Bello’s administration, Okene was beset by violence, arson, and killings, fueled by politics of bitterness and selfishness. The community was fragmented, with leaders more interested in personal gain than the welfare of their people.

Bello’s rise to the governorship occasioned a change in the narrative. He cultivated unity and purpose within the community, and his leadership was notable for its emphasis on inclusivity and empowerment. As a result, the Ebira people began to reclaim their cultural identity and heritage with renewed pride under his administration.
Bello’s tenure was marked by a notable achievement: hosting high-profile dignitaries in Kogi State, particularly Okene. He achieved a historic first by inviting President Muhammadu Buhari to commission legacy projects in Ebiraland. Furthermore, esteemed guests, including Yemi Osinbajo and senior government officials from Aso Villa, visited Okene during his governorship.
Bello’s leadership strategy included building and empowering future leaders by providing young people with opportunities to develop their skills and assume responsible positions, with Ododo’s emergence as his successor demonstrating Bello’s commitment to cultivating and advancing talented individuals.

Throughout his tenure, Bello exhibited a robust vision and unwavering commitment to the advancement of Kogi State and its constituents. His diligent efforts have yielded enduring benefits for all stakeholders, and his leadership has been particularly transformative for the Ebira people.

As a witness to the historical challenges faced by the Ebira community, it is evident that Bello’s stewardship has been a catalyst for profound change, and his legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire and empower future generations.
