Global Time Nigeria reports that in Nigeria, Democracy Day is a national public holiday celebrated on June 12 to commemorate the restoration of democracy in 1999 and to honor the June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as the freest and fairest election in the country’s history.

This date was officially adopted in 2018, replacing the previous May 29 celebration, to recognize the symbolic importance of the 1993 election and the late M.K.O. Abiola, the presumed winner who was denied office by the military regime.
