Nasarawa/Toto Politics: Pressure Mounts on Mahmud Awal Over 2027 Direction, Supporters Told to Remain Calm
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa/Toto Federal Constituency, Mahmud Awal, has appealed to his supporters and political associates to remain calm amid growing pressure on him to align politically with former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, following the outcome of the party’s primaries.
The appeal was contained in a statement issued on Monday by a member of his campaign council, Mohammed Abdulbasid Barou, shortly after the former police chief and governorship aspirant announced his resignation from the APC over alleged irregularities that characterized the recently concluded primaries.
Barou described Awal as a grassroots politician and a leader widely admired by the people for his understanding of their struggles, aspirations, and expectations.
According to the statement, Awal remains a loyal and committed member of the APC at both the state and national levels, despite ongoing political consultations ahead of the 2027 House of Representatives election.
“As a loyal, committed, and dedicated member of the APC at both the state and federal levels, Hon. Awal remains steadfast in his political convictions and commitment to the party,” the statement read.
It added that while discussions were ongoing regarding the future political direction ahead of the 2027 elections, Awal had not made any official pronouncement concerning the demands and concerns raised by supporters and stakeholders.
“We therefore call on our teaming supporters to maintain peace, unity, and unwavering faith, knowing fully that power comes from Almighty God, and with patience, dedication, and the support of the people, victory shall prevail,” the statement added.
Awal had earlier obtained the APC nomination and expression of interest forms to contest for the Nasarawa/Toto Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives but later withdrew from the race following zoning arrangements within the party.a
