The Nigeria Police Force in Nasarawa State has issued a stern warning to politicians, political support groups, and their followers against engaging in campaigns, rallies, and processions in violation of the Electoral Act.

The warning follows a recent violent clash between supporters of rival political office seekers in parts of the state, which reportedly led to the destruction of property, vandalisation of campaign billboards, and damage to vehicles belonging to innocent residents.

In a press statement issued on Monday, by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ramhan Nansel, the Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, expressed concern over the growing activities of some political supporters whose actions threaten the peaceful atmosphere currently enjoyed across the state.

The Police Command reminded political actors that Section 98(1) of the Electoral Act 2026 clearly stipulates that political campaigns must not commence earlier than 150 days before polling day and must end 24 hours before the election.

CP Mohammed emphasized that the police remain neutral and committed to ensuring a level playing field for all political stakeholders, while safeguarding lives and property.

He therefore directed all political parties, aspirants, support groups, and their agents to strictly comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act regarding the commencement and conduct of political campaigns, rallies, meetings, and other related activities.

The police commissioner further warned that any individual, group, or political organization found violating the law, sponsoring thugs, engaging in unlawful political activities, or participating in actions capable of breaching public peace would be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.

He also called on parents, guardians, community leaders, and political stakeholders to caution their wards and supporters against violence, hooliganism, political intolerance, and any conduct capable of undermining peace and security in the state.

According to him, the command will not hesitate to deploy all lawful measures to maintain public order and protect residents from intimidation, harassment, or any form of disturbance.

The Nasarawa State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a peaceful, secure, and conducive environment for all residents and urged members of the public to remain law-abiding and promptly report suspicious activities or threats to peace to the nearest police formation.
