Social Democratic Party (SDP) chieftain in Nasarawa State, Hon. Joseph Kaura, has defended the nomination of former Inspector-General of Police, IGP Adamu Abubakar (Rtd.), as the party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election.
Kaura was reacting to allegations by Barr. Ebere Kana that Abubakar’s emergence contravened provisions of the Electoral Act.
Kana had reportedly based his argument on an affidavit said to have been deposed by Mr. Musa Adamu Angba.

However, Kaura dismissed the allegation, insisting that the nomination exercise followed due process.
He disclosed that the SDP National Secretariat wrote to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) concerning the exercise.
Kaura further claimed that the Nasarawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner attended the exercise physically, alongside two other officials from INEC’s National Headquarters who monitored proceedings.
The SDP stakeholder consequently questioned the basis of the allegation that the nomination process breached electoral law.
He also challenged Kana over what he described as an attempt to interpret the Electoral Act on behalf of INEC.
Kaura said the latest criticism was simply “another dimension of distraction,” noting that Abubakar’s candidacy had faced criticism even before his formal emergence as the party’s candidate.
He appealed to Kana, whom he described as his “very good friend and brother,” to concentrate on marketing his own candidate.

According to Kaura, the 2027 election would be influenced by the acceptability of individual candidates, rather than party platforms alone.
He said Abubakar had attracted supporters from across several political parties and expressed confidence in his chances at the poll.
