Party claims Osun result signals growing rejection of APC, urges Nigerians to back ‘people-oriented’ leadership

The Allied People’s Movement (APM) has declared that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will lose the 2027 presidential election to its candidate, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, arguing that the outcome of the recent Osun governorship election signals growing opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The National Publicity Secretary of the APM, Abubakar Yusuf, made the assertion in a statement reacting to the Osun governorship election, which he described as evidence that Nigerians were yearning for a change in leadership.

Yusuf said the outcome of the election in President Tinubu’s home state represented what he described as “a triumph of the people” and a warning to the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, the result demonstrated that no political establishment is unbeatable when voters decide to reject it.
APM: Osun Result Warning to Tinubu
The APM spokesman argued that the reception allegedly given to some APC leaders during the Osun election should serve as a warning to the ruling party.
He claimed that the reported booing of some APC figures showed what he described as growing dissatisfaction with the Tinubu administration.
Yusuf maintained that the development could affect the APC’s ability to mobilise support during the 2027 presidential campaign.
He said the party should not assume that Nigerians would automatically support its candidate, arguing that voters would judge the administration based on its record in office.
Party Raises ‘APM’ Chant at APC Events
The APM also cited an alleged incident at an APC rally in Oyo State where an APC governorship candidate reportedly chanted “APM” repeatedly.
Yusuf said the incident should serve as a warning that some APC members might not be fully committed to the ruling party ahead of the next general election.
He argued that the development, alongside what he described as public dissatisfaction, could create an opening for the APM and its presidential candidate.
APM Promotes Makinde’s Record
The party’s spokesman said Nigerians were increasingly gravitating towards Makinde because of what he described as the governor’s record of performance, competence and commitment to people-oriented governance.
Yusuf argued that Makinde had demonstrated leadership capacity during his tenure as governor of Oyo State and could replicate such policies at the federal level if elected president.
He also claimed that Oyo State’s economic transformation under Makinde had attracted interest beyond Nigeria, citing a visit by an African president to the state to learn from the governor’s leadership experience.
The APM spokesman said the party’s presidential candidate would offer Nigerians what he described as an alternative to the current administration.
APM Accuses Tinubu Government of Economic Hardship
Yusuf criticised the Tinubu administration over what he described as economic hardship, inflation, unemployment, insecurity, infrastructure challenges and declining public confidence.
He alleged that the APC government had failed to meet the expectations of Nigerians and argued that the electorate would use the 2027 election to demand accountability.
The APM spokesman, however, did not provide independent evidence in the statement to substantiate his broad assessment of the administration’s performance.
APM Warns Against Electoral Manipulation
The party also cautioned the APC against any attempt to manipulate the 2027 presidential election.
Yusuf said the APM would resist any effort to subvert what he described as the will of Nigerian voters.
He urged the ruling party to “read the handwriting on the wall” and prepare for what he described as a competitive presidential election.
The APM National Publicity Secretary congratulated Nigerians on what he described as the triumph of their will in the Osun governorship election and said the party was prepared to lead what he called a national effort to challenge the dominance of the APC in 2027.
The party’s declaration sets the stage for what is expected to be a fiercely contested 2027 presidential race, with political parties already positioning their candidates and structures ahead of the election.
