The 2027 governorship election in Benue State is already taking shape as a major political contest, with questions over security, governance, economic hardship and development expected to dominate the campaign.
For supporters of Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa, SAN, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, the election presents an opportunity for Benue voters to demand what they describe as better leadership and a new direction for the state.
Governor Hyacinth Alia, who assumed office in 2023, will be seeking another term, but his administration is facing criticism from political opponents and sections of the public over insecurity, displacement, infrastructure, employment and the economic difficulties confronting residents.

Critics have questioned whether the financial resources available to the Benue government since 2023 have translated into sufficient development across communities.

Against this backdrop, Aondoakaa’s emergence as the PDP’s 2027 governorship candidate has given the opposition a prominent figure around whom it can build its campaign.
His supporters describe him as an experienced politician and administrator with the capacity to provide what they consider purposeful leadership.
They argue that his proposed agenda should focus on security, agriculture, employment, infrastructure, investment and economic recovery.
For Aondoakaa’s camp, the logic is clear: Benue cannot achieve sustainable development while farmers remain unable to cultivate their land and communities remain vulnerable to attacks.

Agriculture is expected to remain central to the 2027 election because of Benue’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s major agricultural states.
A government that succeeds in restoring security to farming communities, improving rural roads, expanding access to agricultural inputs and creating markets for farmers could have a significant impact on the state’s economy.
Aondoakaa’s supporters say his administration would place agriculture and rural economic development at the heart of its programme.
They argue that farmers need more than political promises. They need security, infrastructure, access to finance, markets and policies that make farming profitable.
Youth Unemployment and Economic Hardship
Youth unemployment and economic hardship are also likely to influence voting decisions in 2027.
Across Benue, young people are seeking opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship and skills development. The opposition argues that the next administration must create an environment capable of attracting private investment while supporting small businesses and local industries.
Aondoakaa’s supporters believe his proposed emphasis on investment, agriculture and job creation could provide an alternative economic pathway for the state.
2027: A Referendum on Performance?
The election could ultimately become a referendum on the performance of the Alia administration.
