As world leaders converge on New York for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), attention is again focused on the global push to accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) ahead of the 2030 deadline.
The General Debate of the 81st UN General Assembly is taking place from September 22 to 26 and September 28, 2026, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The session provides a major platform for heads of state, governments and other high-level representatives to address global development challenges.
For Nigeria, the occasion provides an opportunity to highlight its ongoing efforts toward the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, particularly in poverty reduction, healthcare, education, gender equality, economic empowerment and sustainable financing.

At the centre of Nigeria’s SDG implementation efforts is Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals. Her office provides strategic direction and coordination for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in Nigeria and represents the country on SDG-related matters at the global level.
The 2030 Agenda, adopted by world leaders in 2015, contains 17 Sustainable Development Goals designed to address poverty, inequality, health, education, decent work, environmental sustainability and other interconnected development challenges by 2030.
Nigeria’s approach has increasingly emphasised the domestication of the global goals through national and sub-national institutions. The country’s SDG implementation framework is designed to translate global commitments into programmes and interventions that respond to local development needs.
With only a few years remaining before the 2030 deadline, the UNGA provides an important opportunity for Nigeria to present its progress, challenges and priorities while strengthening international partnerships around sustainable development.
Nigeria has also presented its Third Voluntary National Review on the SDGs, highlighting its emphasis on inclusive development, institutional reform, data-driven policymaking and global partnerships
The 81st UNGA therefore comes at a critical stage of the SDG journey. For Nigeria, the challenge is not merely to restate its commitment to the global goals, but to deepen implementation, strengthen financing and ensure that development interventions translate into measurable improvements in the lives of citizens.
