NGO Inaugurates 20 Member Committee to tackle drug abuse in Nasarawa
A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Advocacy for Integrity and Role of Law Initiative (AIRLIN) has inaugurated a 20-member committee to tackle drug abuse and other social vices amongst the youth population in the Nasarawa State.
Speaking at the event on Saturday in Lafia, Ahj. Muhammad Gamawa, National Chairman of the NGO, said that they are a non-political and non-religious group who are interested in addressing issues leading to youth restiveness in the country.
He lamented the high prevalence rate of drug abuse in the country among the productive population.
He also said that the kidnappings going across the country were being carried out by the youths and challenged them to desist from it before they spoil their future.
Gamawa added that the group is working in collaboration with other organisations to complement the efforts of the government toward addressing the vices and criminalities in the country.
The National President added that the group looks forward to a new Nigeria where people would respect each other tribe and religion.
He called for more volunteers to join the campaign and create an enduring awareness among the youths who are the future of the country.
Also, Ahj. Ibrahim Ibrahim, Nasarawa State Coordinator of the group said that the committee is saddle with the responsibility of organising town hall meetings in their respective areas to orient them on the dangers of drug abuse.
The state coordinator said that the committee members were drawn from the 13 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.
Josephine Malla from Wamba LGA and Bako Garba from Toto LGA who spoke on behalf of the committee members said that most of the criminals are doing what they are doing under the influence of drugs.
They, therefore, promised to work seriously in their respective areas to tackle the menace of drug abuse and other social vices in the state
He explained that the committee would help to educate the youths especially the addicts in their respective areas against indulging in acts due to their mental, health, social, and economic implications.
He also urged the youths to engage themselves in meaningful and lawful activities in order not to be used by criminal and evil elements for selfish gains.
