Two more Rivers Lawmakers beg Fubara: Sheath Your Sword, Drop impeachment now

….Appeal piles pressure on Wike loyalists as Khana, Obio/Akpor reps join chorus for peace

By Yahaya Idris

In a dramatic twist to the lingering political crisis rocking Rivers State, two more members of the House of Assembly, Tuesday, pleaded with their colleagues to immediately withdraw the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Ngozi Odu.

The lawmakers, Barile Nwakoh (Khana Constituency I) and Emilia Amadi (Obio/Akpor Constituency II) , made the emotional appeal on the floor of the House, urging an end to the months-long feud that has paralysed governance in the oil-rich state.

Their intervention came exactly 24 hours after two other pro-Fubara assembly members adopted a similar position, signalling growing cracks within the anti-Fubara camp dominated by allies of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike. ‘Enough is Enough’, Nwakoh’s Fiery Plea

Speaking during plenary at the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex in Port Harcourt, Nwakoh, a first-term lawmaker known for his grassroots mobilization in Khana, painted a picture of a state on the brink. “Our people are suffering. Hunger is biting harder, insecurity is rising, and we are here playing politics of impeachment?

This is not the time for war; it is time for peace. I beg my colleagues: withdraw the impeachment notice now. Let Governor Fubara deliver on his mandate,” he declared.
Nwakoh’s outburst drew applause from a section of the chamber, highlighting the deepening fault lines.

Sources within the Assembly told our correspondent that at least five lawmakers, mostly from Rivers East Senatorial District, are now privately pushing for truce talks, fearing electoral backlash ahead of the 2027 polls.

Amadi: ‘Impeachment Won’t Stand’ Emilia Amadi, representing the densely populated Obio/Akpor Constituency II, echoed Nwakoh’s call, adding a legal dimension. “The impeachment process is dead on arrival. The Supreme Court has spoken on such matters, and history will judge us harshly if we persist. Let us sheath our swords and allow the governor to work,” she said.

Amadi’s position is particularly significant, as Obio/Akpor remains a hotbed of the Fubara-Wike rivalry.

Our investigations reveal she survived intense pressure from Wike’s camp last year, including threats of recall, before defecting fully to Fubara’s side in October 2025.

The impeachment plot traces back to October 2024, when 27 pro-Wike lawmakers out of 32, served Fubara an impeachment notice over alleged financial misconduct and abuse of power.

The move followed Fubara’s probe of the Assembly’s finances and his push for local government autonomy amid the bombshell explosion at the Assembly Complex in May 2024.

A fragile peace brokered by President Bola Tinubu in December 2024 collapsed by mid-2025, with fresh defections tilting the House 25-7 in favour of Fubara loyalists.

Despite this, the pro-Wike faction, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule (now a Wike enforcer), insists on pushing the impeachment, citing “irredeemable breaches” by the governor.

Insiders say the latest appeals could force a vote next week, especially as economic woes, including unpaid salaries and flooding in Port Harcourt – fuel public anger.

“Wike’s influence is waning; Fubara’s delivery on roads and health is winning hearts,” a PDP chieftain in Khana whispered to our reporter.

Reacting, a source close to Amaewhule dismissed the pleas as “Fubara’s scripted drama.” “They are traitors bought with state funds. Impeachment remains on course,” the source fumed.

Wike, who handpicked Fubara as successor in 2023, has repeatedly denied orchestrating the crisis, but his public jibes at “betrayers” keep the pot boappeals.

Civil society groups hailed the appeals. “This is statesmanship. Rivers needs healing, not endless litigation,” said Celestine Okoye of the Initiative for Transparent Governance.

As plenary adjourned amid rowdy sessions, all eyes are on whether the four defectors’ calls will sway the House.

With Fubara’s 2027 re-election bid looming, the impeachment saga may yet fizzle out – or explode into full judicial war.
