In a major display of grassroots empowerment, the member representing Lafia Central Constituency at the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Hon. Solomon Yakubu Akwashiki, has disbursed empowerment items valued at over N70 million to constituents across Lafia/Obi Federal Constituency, reaffirming his commitment to improving livelihoods and promoting self-reliance.
At a well-attended event held in Lafia, the lawmaker distributed four Sharon buses, 22 motorcycles, and 60 grinding machines to beneficiaries, alongside cash support for women and students aimed at enhancing small-scale businesses and supporting education.
The initiative drew a large crowd of political stakeholders, community leaders, and supporters, marking what constituents described as one of the most impactful constituency outreach programmes in recent times.
Speaking at the occasion, Akwashiki, who chairs the House Committee on Public Accounts, said the gesture was part of his ongoing efforts to uplift the living standards of his people and reward their continued support.
He emphasized that leadership must be rooted in service, compassion, and responsiveness to the needs of the people.
“The essence of leadership is to show love to your people and appreciate them for their support and votes. This is what I am doing,” he stated. “I have provided boreholes, electricity, employment opportunities, JAMB registrations, health interventions, and several other programmes. By God’s grace, I will continue to be the voice of the voiceless and defend the interests of my people at all times.”
The lawmaker urged constituents who are yet to benefit from his empowerment initiatives to remain patient, assuring them that more dividends of democracy would be delivered in due course.
He also called on Nigerians to prioritize competence over ethnic and religious considerations when electing leaders, stressing that good governance thrives where capable individuals are entrusted with power.
Quoting a biblical passage, he added, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice. I urge our people to shun ethnic and religious politics and embrace unity for development.”
Akwashiki also used the platform to formally declare his intention to contest for the House of Representatives seat for Lafia/Obi Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections under the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), seeking the support and cooperation of all stakeholders to actualize his ambition.
In his remarks, the Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Dr. Danladi Jatau, lauded Akwashiki’s consistency in delivering people-oriented projects, describing him as a lawmaker deeply committed to the welfare of his constituents.
He noted that he had personally attended multiple editions of Akwashiki’s empowerment programmes, each reflecting tangible impact on the grassroots.
“Hon. Akwashiki is someone who truly has his people at heart. In the Assembly, despite our different political affiliations, we work together in unity for the progress of the state,” Jatau said. “He has also shown remarkable support for the administration of Governor Abdullahi Sule, and I commend him for that.”
The Speaker further called on Nigerians to embrace peace, unity, and cooperation regardless of political, ethnic, or religious differences, stressing that national development depends on collective harmony.
The event attracted top figures within the Social Democratic Party, including the National Chairman, Prof. Sadiq Abubakar Gombe; the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo; former Minister of Information, Hon. Labaran Maku; members of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abubakar Sarki Dahiru and Hon. Jonathan Gaza; Nasarawa State SDP Chairman, Barr. Ibrahim Likita Ajegena; and the party’s National Women Leader, Hajiya Sada’atu Abdullahi, among others.
In separate remarks, the dignitaries commended Akwashiki for his dedication to grassroots development and for executing projects that directly impact the lives of ordinary citizens.
They urged beneficiaries to make productive use of the items distributed and cautioned against selling them, noting that the empowerment initiative was designed to create sustainable income and improve living standards.
The SDP leaders also called on Nigerians to rally behind the party in the 2027 general elections, expressing confidence in its capacity to deliver credible leadership across all levels of government.
Beneficiaries, including Evelyn Markus and Christiana Akolo, expressed gratitude to the lawmaker for the support, describing the intervention as timely and life-changing.
They pledged their continued loyalty, prayers, and support for his political aspirations.
The colourful event also featured cultural dance performances by various ethnic groups, reflecting the diversity and unity of the constituency, and further underscoring the significance of the occasion as both a political and community milestone.
