Religious and political leaders in Nasarawa State have identified proper parenting as a major solution to what they described as growing moral decline in society.
They made the remarks on Monday during the naming ceremony of twins born to the Special Adviser to Governor Abdullahi Sule on Legislative Liaison, Hon. Muhammad Ibrahim Alkali, at his residence in Lafia.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Dr Aliyu Bello, said poor upbringing remained one of the major causes of moral decay, urging parents to take greater responsibility for the upbringing of their children.
He stressed the importance of combining religious and formal education, saying it was critical to raising responsible future leaders.
Dr Bello also urged political leaders to exercise caution in their public statements and avoid actions capable of creating tension in the polity.
“We must be careful with our utterances and stop encouraging youths to engage in acts of intolerance or bullying. Leadership is ordained by God, and no one rises by accident,” he said.
The ceremony was presided over by the Deputy Chief Imam of Lafia Central Mosque, Malam Yusuf Ahmadu, who offered prayers for the newborns and urged parents to instill strong moral values in their children.
He said raising children with good character was essential for building a peaceful and egalitarian society.
The twins, a boy and a girl, were named Yasir and Fatima. Their father, Hon. Alkali, said his daughter was named after his late wife.
The event attracted several top government officials and political figures, including the Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Dr Danladi Jatau, former Speaker Ibrahim Balarabe Abdullahi, the State Accountant General, Dr Musa Ahmed Muhammad, and the member representing Lafia North, Barrister Esson Mairiga.
In his remarks, Hon. Alkali thanked God for the birth of the twins and appreciated guests for joining his family to celebrate the occasion.
The ceremony also featured traditional praise singing and prayers for the family.
