Director-General of the Delta State Orientation and Communications Bureau, Dr. Fred Oghenesivbe, has challenged students in the state to protect their future by rejecting illicit drugs and remaining committed to education.

Oghenesivbe spoke while leading the second phase of the Drug-Free Delta Campaign to schools in Ogwashi-Uku and Asaba.

The campaign was organised by the Delta State Orientation and Communications Bureau in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The team visited Comprehensive College, Ogwashi-Uku, Okpanam High School and West End Mixed Secondary School, Asaba.

Oghenesivbe told the students that the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was interested in their welfare and future.

He urged them to resist peer pressure and avoid experimenting with illicit drugs.

“Among you here today, I want to see future Governors, members of the House of Assembly, lawyers, doctors, engineers and other professionals. Your future is before you, and you must protect it by making the right choices today,” he said.

He also cited Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as an example of the achievements that can be attained through discipline, education and commitment.

According to him, young people should not allow substance abuse to derail their ambitions.

NDLEA Sensitises Students

The Deputy State Commander of the NDLEA, Silas Omobhude, took the students through an educational session on illicit substances and their effects.

He warned them to exercise caution when attending parties and other social events.

Omobhude advised students not to accept food, drinks or other substances from unknown sources.

He mentioned “Kolos”, “Ice”, cocaine and cannabis among substances that students should avoid.

He also warned about the potential effects of synthetic drug abuse on the brain and behaviour.

The sensitisation featured an interactive drama by selected students, with the participants receiving cash gifts from Oghenesivbe.

School principals and authorities commended the campaign and described the direct engagement with students as useful.

The programme ended with students joining the officials in chanting:

“Say no to drugs, yes to healthy life, yes to education, yes to making Mama proud.”
