The new salary structure approved for academic staff of Delta State-owned universities could strengthen staff morale and contribute to greater stability in the tertiary education sector, former Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku Governing Council Chairman, Dr. Omordi George Ugbomah, has said.

Ugbomah, who is also a Political Science lecturer at Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba, commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for approving the new remuneration structure.

The governor announced that the new salary structure for academic staff of the four state-owned universities would take effect from August 2026, while the structure for non-academic staff and workers in other tertiary institutions would commence from September.

Ugbomah said the decision was important because staff welfare remains a key component of an effective education system.

He said his experience as both a former governing council chairman and university lecturer had given him an understanding of the relationship between staff motivation and institutional performance.

“Improved remuneration for university workers is not simply a welfare measure but an important investment in the stability, productivity and overall quality of the State’s tertiary education system,” he said.

He commended Oborevwori for recognising the contribution of university workers to the development of Delta State.

Ugbomah also urged workers to respond to the salary intervention by improving their commitment to teaching, research, discipline, professionalism and institutional development.

The development comes amid expansion in the state’s university system. Oborevwori said enrolment across the four state-owned universities had increased from about 50,000 students in 2023 to more than 100,000 in 2026.

The governor also said the universities had expanded their programmes to include professional courses such as medicine, law, nursing and accounting.

Ugbomah argued that such expansion makes sustained investment in human resources increasingly important.

He further called for a balance between infrastructure development and staff welfare, stressing that well-equipped institutions also require motivated personnel to deliver quality education.

According to him, the new salary structure could help create a more conducive atmosphere for teaching, learning and research.

He congratulated university workers across Delta State and expressed appreciation to the governor for the intervention.
