Security and education stakeholders in Nasarawa State have expressed support for the National Safe Schools Security Project, following its formal launch in Keffi.
The initiative was unveiled on Thursday at the Zonal Area Office of the Ministry of Education, GRA, Keffi, with representatives of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Nigeria Police Force and Ministry of Education in attendance.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Nasarawa State PCRC Chairman, Dr. Mandy David Abuluya, said the project would strengthen efforts to safeguard schools across the state.
Represented by Ibrahim Babayo, Abuluya said all public and private schools in Nasarawa State are expected to register under the project, following a directive from the Inspector-General of Police.
According to him, a comprehensive database of schools would assist security agencies in identifying educational institutions within their areas of responsibility and improve their capacity to respond to security incidents.
He urged proprietors of private schools, principals and head teachers of public schools to register without delay.
The Keffi Area Commander of the Nigeria Police Force, ACP Iteji Obe, also assured stakeholders of the police’s commitment to the initiative.
Obe said the police would work with the PCRC, Ministry of Education and other security agencies to ensure that schools remain secure.
He stressed the importance of community participation in school security, urging parents and community leaders to share useful information with security agencies.
The Ministry of Education also pledged its support for the project.
Representing the ministry, its Chief Evaluation Officer, Alhaji Audu, commended Ibrahim Babayo for his efforts towards promoting school safety.
