Kogi Assembly Calls On State Government, NEMA To Assist Flooded Communities

The Kogi State House of Assembly has called on the State Government, NEMA and other relevant agencies to come to the aid of communities affected by flooding in the state.

This was contained in a motion of Urgent Public Importance moved by Hon. Tanko Mohammed representing Kogi/Koton Karfi State Constituency, seconded by Hon. Edoko Moses Ododo of Dekina Biraidu State Constituency.

According to him, most of the Communities along the river bank in the constituency are already submerged by the flood, stressing that their means of livelihood has been threatened hence they need the support of the state government, NEMA and other relevant agencies to support the people at this critical time.

He said the people are left with no other options than to relocate to IDP camps in public schools along the Lokoja – Abuja highway.

All members who spoke on the issue are in favor of the motion and commended the mover of the motion pointed out that it is timely for Assembly to call on relevant agencies to render assistance to the affected communities.

According to them, there are nine local government areas that are usually affected anytime the  flood comes, noting that the issue of flooding in Kogi State has become an annual ritual that comes with severe pains in different sectors which includes, heath, education, works.

While ruling on the motion, Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Prince Matthew Kolawole said flooding is becoming a big threat to the people of the state hence it is important for the House to create a new Committee that will handle the humanitarian aspect.

He said it is expedient for the State Government, Nema, Sema and other relevant agencies to assist the affected areas to ameliorate the suffering of the people.

The Assembly also advised the people to move away from the low land to the up land to protect themselves from any mishaps.
