Kogi Assembly set to halt gender violence, child labour

IDRIS AHMED, Lokoja.

Kogi state House of Assembly Committee on Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation has declared its resolve to end gender violence and child labour in the state.

The Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon Comfort Ojoma Nwuchiola Egwaba, who expressed deep concern over the incessant gender related violence, has promised that the legislature will revisit the existing laws with a view to addressing the negative trend.

She disclosed that apart from gender based violence the Committee is to also address the heartless engagement in child labour by mining industries and poised to bring it to an end.

According to her, the House Committee on Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation shall request for a brief on such matters from the relevant ministries, department and agencies in the course of its oversight functions.

Hon Comfort Egwaba made the declaration after the inauguration of the Committee last week at the Chambers of Kogi State House of Assembly.

The lawmaker revealed that the committee received information on such crimes through the President of Women Miners Association, Engineer Janet Adeyemi, during their research validation and policy dialogue.

She extolled the virtues of Governor Yahaya Bello for engaging more women in governance compared to his predecessors, just as she encouraged women at all levels to reciprocate and compliment the governor’s effort by ensuring credible results oriented services.

Hon. Egwaba also called on women to support the APC led administration of Governor Bello in achieving the desired goals on Women and persons with disabilities.

The Committee comprises of Hon. Asema Baba Haruna (Vice Chairman) representing Adavi state constituency, Hon Aliyu Idrees Maikudi representing Kogi constituency, Hon Omotayo Ishaya, and Hon Sunday Daku.

Other members include, Hon Usman Adejoh, Hon Otokiti Zakariya, Hon Akus Lawal and Hon Abu Jibril, while Yahaya Barakat is the Committee Clerk
