The Sheda United football club has defeated the Nuhu Boys football club 7-1 during the opening ceremony of the 19th edition of Kwali area council chairman’s cup football tournament in the area.

Our correspondent report that the 90 minutes game amid Ramadan fasting, which held at Kwali mini stadium on Saturday, saw the Sheda United triumphed against Nuhu Boys football club.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, the chairman of the council, Danladi Chiya, represented by his wife, Mrs Hannatu Chiya, said the chairman’s cup football competition is an annual event organized by the council in order to improve and encourage sporting activities amongst the youth in the area.

He added that the football competition will also help to keep mental, physical and fitness of the body at all the time, saying sporting competition will help in fostering peace and unity amongst the youth across the council.

Also speaking, the speaker of the council, Nuhu Daniel Kwali, noted that such football competition will give the youth an opportunity to showcase their talent in the area of sporting activities in the are.

He added that the football tournament is an opportunity to foster unity amongst the youth, which he said will also helped to divert their attention from engaging in form of social vices in the area.

The speaker, while commending the council chairman for organizing the football competition, also lauded efforts of the coaches and sport department of the council for ensuring for putting in place the tournament.

On his part, the divisional head of sport of the council, Mr Habaku John, said the chairman’s football competition was an annual tournament aimed at keeping the youth busy and to also identified some of the talented ones.

He said it was through such football competition that some of the talented ones are selected to participate in outside football competition and other sporting activities outside the FCT.

According to him, 15 football clubs across the ten political wards of the council registered for the chairman’s football competition, even as he said the numbers of the football clubs were less this year due to the government cashless policy and Ramadan fasting period.

John, however, disclosed that arrangements are being put in place to also commence female football competition after the completion of the chairman’s football tournament in the area.

“And immediately after the completion of this chairman’s football tournament, we will immediately kick off the under 12, 13 and 15 female football competition,” he said.
