Nasarawa Assembly urges Govt to provide modern boats, protective devices to avert boat accident

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly, has urged the state government to as a matter of necessity provide modern boats to riverine areas in order to minimize boat mayhem in the State.

This, the House said, is to minimise the rate of boat mishap in the state.

Rt. Hon Ibrahim Balarabe Abdullahi, the Speaker of the House made the call while reading the House resolution under the matter of public interest brought by Hon Barr. Esson Mairiga, member representing Lafia North constituency.

The Speaker said that providing modern boats would also boost the agricultural and economic activities of communities living in the riverine areas in the state.

The Speaker sympathized with the victims and families of boat mishap across the state.

” First and foremost, I want to commend Hon Barr. Esson Mairiga for bringing this matter of public interest and to thank Honourable members for your positive contributions.

” I was also a victim of boat mishap, people died in the boat mishap but thank God I survived it.

” We call on the state government to as a matter of necessity provide modern boats to riverine areas.

” We also urge the state government to provide all the teachnology needed to alert communities of impending flooding in their communities.

” We also urge the state government to provide life jackets to travellers in riverine communities.

Also contributing, Hon John Ali, Hon Solomon Akwashiki, Hon Larry Ven Bawa and Hon Mohammed Isimbabi supported Hon Esson for bringing the matter.

They also sympathized with the boat mishap victims and urged the state government to provide modern boats to riverine areas in the state.

Earlier, Hon Esson Mairiga, member representing Lafia North constituency while bringing the matter said it was unfortunate that boat mishap has claimed 14 lives while 12 survived the boat mishap.

” Mr Speaker and Hon colleagues, if you recall on 19th August, 2023, there was boat Mishap in Wayo Kugar of my constituency where 19 people capsized.

” While 12 lost their lives and 7 survived. Again on 4th of September, 2023, 7 people capsized at River Gidan Buba where 2 lost their lives and 5 survived, ” he said.

Esson appealed to the state government to provide modern boats to the riverine communities of his Constituency

In a related development, the House screened and confirmed Hon Godwin Maikeri Danladi as Permanent Member of NASIEC.

Rt. Hon Ibrahim Balarabe Abdullahi, the Speaker of the House announced his confirmation after he appeared for screening during the House proceedings today in Lafia.

The Speaker urged the nominee to discharge his duties without fear or favour for free and fear election in the state.

Abdullahi directed the Clerk of the House to communicate the House resolution for Gov. Sule further action.

Earlier, Hon Mohammed Adamu Omadefu, the Majority Leader of the House moved a motion for the confirmation of Hon Godwin as NASIEC member.

Hon Luka Iliya Zhekaba, the Minority Leader of the House seconded the motion.

The House unanimously screened and confirmed Hon Godwin.
