…DIG Onwuemelie represents IGP in Anambra, stresses intelligence-led operations, officer training and human rights

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to intelligence-led policing, technology-driven investigations, and stronger community partnerships as part of efforts to enhance security across the country.

The assurance was given on Tuesday during the IGP’s operational tour of the South-East geopolitical zone. In Anambra State, the IGP was represented by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) in charge of the South-East Zone, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie.

The nationwide tour, which covers all geopolitical zones, is aimed at assessing security structures, improving operational efficiency, and strengthening collaboration among Police Commands, sister security agencies, and grassroots stakeholders.

Addressing officers and men of the Anambra State Police Command at the Command Headquarters in Amawbia, DIG Onwuemelie said the visit underscored the IGP’s commitment to proactive and modern policing.

He urged personnel to adopt practical, intelligence-based approaches tailored to the prevailing security realities in Anambra State and the wider South-East region.

A major highlight of the visit was the announcement of plans by the Nigeria Police Force to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into critical aspects of policing, including criminal investigations, intelligence gathering, data analysis, and personnel training.

According to the DIG, the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to modernize law enforcement operations and prepare officers to effectively tackle emerging security challenges.

“Crime and policing are evolving alongside technology.

The Nigeria Police Force is embracing Artificial Intelligence to enhance intelligence gathering, accelerate investigations, and provide officers with real-time information needed for effective policing,” Onwuemelie stated

He disclosed that officers across various ranks would undergo specialized training on AI applications to ensure the Force remains equipped for the future of policing.

The DIG further charged officers to uphold professionalism and respect for human rights in the discharge of their duties, emphasizing that effective policing must be rooted in accountability, integrity, and public trust

Welcoming the DIG on behalf of the IGP, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, expressed appreciation to the Police leadership for the visit and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to community-oriented policing.

He pledged to deepen collaboration with vigilante groups, traditional rulers, town unions, and civil society organizations as part of efforts to strengthen security across the state.

CP Orutugu noted that the Command would continue to intensify operations against kidnapping, armed robbery, and other violent crimes while promoting dialogue and stakeholder engagement in addressing security concerns.

The tour also featured strategic engagements with security agencies, community leaders, and other stakeholders on intelligence sharing, crime prevention, and coordinated responses to security threats affecting the South-East, including separatist activities and attacks on public infrastructure.

The Anambra State Police Command reiterated its commitment to working closely with all partners to sustain peace, improve public safety, and support socio-economic development across the state.
