Zaki Biam Case: Aondoakaa Camp Rejects Allegations, Faults Alia Administration

…Governor Alia Playing Politics of Deception

The media team of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) 2027 governorship candidate in Benue State, Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa, SAN, has strongly rejected allegations made by the Benue State Government regarding the Zaki Biam compensation case, describing them as politically motivated and lacking factual basis.

In a statement signed by James Ian, Media Assistant to Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa, SAN, the camp accused Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration of resorting to propaganda instead of addressing the worsening security challenges confronting Benue State.

The reaction followed an article published on Thursday, July 16, 2026, by Governor Alia’s Technical Adviser on Media, Publicity and Strategic Communication, Solomon Iorpev, titled “Why PDP and its Candidate’s Security Promises Lack Credibility in Benue.”

According to the statement, Iorpev’s claim that Aondoakaa frustrated compensation for victims of the 2001 Zaki Biam and Gbeji military invasion was misleading and unsupported by evidence.

The statement argued that, as Attorney-General of the Federation, Aondoakaa merely carried out his constitutional responsibility by defending the Federal Government’s legal interests, including exercising its right to appeal court judgments.

It maintained that filing an appeal is a lawful judicial process and should not be interpreted as hostility toward Benue people.

The statement further noted that the Zaki Biam military invasion occurred in October 2001, while the Federal High Court judgment awarding ₦41.8 billion in damages was delivered on July 5, 2007.

According to the media aide, negotiations for an out-of-court settlement had already begun before Aondoakaa assumed office as Attorney-General of the Federation.

The statement added that the eventual settlement resulted in an ₦8 billion compensation package for the affected communities, insisting that the process did not originate with Aondoakaa.

Rather than focusing on events dating back more than two decades, the statement urged the Benue State Government to explain what it described as the deteriorating security situation under Governor Alia’s administration.

The media aide questioned why many communities across Gwer West, Agatu, Katsina-Ala, Logo, Okpokwu, Ukum, Otukpo, Kwande and Guma continue to experience violent attacks and displacement despite government assurances.

It also referenced incidents in Yelewata and other affected communities, arguing that thousands of residents remain displaced while many farmers are yet to return to their ancestral homes.

The statement challenged the Benue State Government to provide evidence supporting claims that Aondoakaa personally opposed compensation for victims of the military invasion.

It asked government officials to produce any official statement, court judgment or investigative report linking the former Attorney-General to efforts aimed at preventing compensation payments.

The media aide also dismissed attempts to associate Aondoakaa with the death of Chief Alexander Gaadi, describing such allegations as malicious and unsupported by any judicial or investigative findings.

According to the statement, the Alia administration should prioritize addressing insecurity rather than engaging in political attacks against opposition figures.

It maintained that Benue residents are more concerned about protecting lives, restoring peace to affected communities and ensuring displaced persons return safely to their homes.

The statement added that history would judge governments based on their response to the security crisis rather than political rhetoric surrounding events that occurred decades ago.
