NUJ Nasarawa Election: Journalists Head to Polls Monday as Three Aspirants Battle for Chairmanship

All roads lead to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre along Makurdi Road, Lafia, on Monday, July 20, 2026, as journalists across Nasarawa State prepare to elect a new State Chairman and other members of the State Executive Council.
The election marks the end of the tenure of the outgoing State Chairman, Comrade Salihu Alkali, with members of the union expected to choose a successor through a democratic voting process.
The 2026 NUJ Election Credentials Committee, chaired by Dr. Kalu Idika, has confirmed that all arrangements for the election have been concluded.
According to the committee, accreditation of eligible voters and the voting process will commence at 8:00 a.m. at the NUJ Press Centre in Lafia.
Political observers and members of the media community have described this year’s chairmanship contest as a “clash of titans,” owing to the calibre and experience of the three aspirants vying for the union’s top position.
The contenders are Juliana Ofoku of the Nasarawa State Ministry of Information, Samson Jonah of the Nasarawa Broadcasting Service (NBS), and Sunday John of the Correspondents’ Chapel.
The keenly contested race has generated significant interest within the state’s journalism community, with members expressing optimism that the election will further strengthen the union and consolidate democratic values within the profession.
As anticipation builds, attention is focused on the NUJ, widely regarded as the watchdog of society, to conduct a peaceful, credible, transparent and fair election that reflects the principles of accountability and professionalism it advocates.
