Victims of banditry, communal and land-related clashes, floods and fire outbreaks in Nasarawa State have received relief materials from the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, and the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency, NASEMA.

The materials were distributed on Monday at the Chun Mada Palace in Akwanga to affected residents from Akwanga, Wamba and Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Areas.

The intervention included bags of rice and beans, cartons of pasta, vegetable oil, mattresses, blankets, salt and other essential commodities.

The Director-General of NASEMA, Mr. Benjamin Akwash, said the distribution was aimed at alleviating the suffering of residents affected by disasters and insecurity.

He said the agency had received reports concerning attacks by gunmen, land disputes and farmer-herder clashes in Nasarawa North Senatorial District.

Akwash said the intervention was part of government’s responsibility to respond to emergencies and support citizens whose livelihoods had been disrupted.

The North Central Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Mr. Audu Yohanna, said the Federal Government had condemned the incidents that affected the communities and facilitated the release of the relief items.

Yohanna, who represented the federal emergency management response at the event, appealed to people who were not among the beneficiaries to exercise patience.

He said additional assistance would be made available to affected residents.

The Chairman of Akwanga LGA, Safiyanu Isah Andaha, represented by his deputy, Hon. Basau Ibrahim Shuaibu, described the intervention as commendable.

He assured NEMA and NASEMA of the council’s cooperation and support in the discharge of their humanitarian responsibilities.

The Chun Mada, HRH Samson Gamu Yare, also praised the agencies for extending assistance to disaster victims.

He appealed for greater emphasis on preventive and early-response measures, saying emergency agencies should endeavour to support vulnerable communities before disasters escalate.

Beneficiaries at the event expressed gratitude to NEMA and NASEMA, saying the materials would provide immediate relief to families affected by the various emergencies.

They also assured the agencies that the items would be used for their intended purposes.
