No fewer than 110 residents of Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State have benefited from an empowerment programme initiated by the council chairman, Dr. Agbawu Mek Agbawu.
The beneficiaries, mostly women, received cash, motorcycles, sanitary pads and other items with a combined value of over N20 million.
The exercise, held at the local government secretariat on Saturday, covered all 11 electoral wards in Kokona.
The state APC Secretary, Mr. Yarus Dagusa, commended the chairman for the initiative and said the programme would provide relief to residents facing economic difficulties.

Dagusa appealed to the beneficiaries and supporters of the party to reciprocate the gesture by supporting APC candidates during forthcoming elections.
The Chairman of Wamba Local Government Area, Hon. Ezekiel Musa Jagga, also commended Agbawu and urged beneficiaries to ensure that the items were used for the purposes for which they were provided.
Similarly, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. John Mamman, called on other leaders and politicians to emulate the initiative and support vulnerable members of their communities.
Agbawu said the empowerment programme was intended to alleviate poverty and create wealth among residents.
He explained that the intervention was designed to reach residents across the 11 electoral wards and included motorcycles, cash and sanitary pads courtesy of the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
The chairman said the council’s human capital development efforts were being implemented within a peaceful environment, which he urged residents to sustain.
He also acknowledged the administration of Governor Abdullahi Sule, saying human capital development remained an important focus of the state government.
Agbawu urged the beneficiaries to use the items wisely and productively.
He assured residents who were not included in the first phase that additional opportunities would be provided in subsequent phases.
