RE: “Wike Must Be Told That PDP Does Not Belong To Him” – A Misguided Assertion by Umar Sani

As the State Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Rivers State Chapter, I find it necessary to respond with clarity, constitutional insight, and unwavering fidelity to the truth, regarding the article credited to Umar Sani, former spokesperson for the PDP’s 2019 Presidential Campaign, titled “Wike Must Be Told That PDP Does Not Belong To Him.”

Let it be stated from the outset that the PDP is indeed a national platform—one rooted in the ideals of democracy, federalism, and institutional fidelity. However, to suggest, directly or by innuendo, that His Excellency, Chief (Barr.) Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON, does not possess a legitimate, significant, and deeply invested stake in the party’s journey and future is both mischievous and politically simplistic.

Chief Wike’s contributions to the survival and continued relevance of the PDP are neither speculative nor marginal—they are recorded, verifiable, and indelible. At a time when many political figures, including Mr. Umar Sani, stood on the sidelines or sought refuge in silence and convenience, Wike stood firm, investing political capital, personal resources, and strategic leadership to hold the PDP together, particularly in its most vulnerable moments.

To attempt to diminish Chief Wike’s role and stature within the PDP is to ignore history and trivialize sacrifice. Such commentary, bordering on populist provocation, risks deepening divisions rather than fostering unity—a goal every true party loyalist ought to pursue.

It is important to remind Mr. Sani that leadership and influence in the PDP are not earned through tabloid headlines or social media broadsides, but through demonstrable commitment, grassroots mobilisation, and an unbroken record of loyalty—even when it is inconvenient or costly.

Chief Wike has never laid claim to ownership of the PDP. What he exemplifies is the fighting spirit, resilience, and strategic depth that have kept the party afloat amidst storms of external aggression and internal betrayal. His influence—like that of other deserving leaders—is earned, not anointed, and is exercised within the ambit of the party’s constitution and democratic norms.

Let it also be known that Chief Wike is a man of principle. He detests disloyalty and places high premium on honour and integrity in political dealings. For him, agreement is the test of gentlemen—a test he has consistently passed and to which he holds others accountable. In politics, as in life, trust and fidelity to one’s word remain the foundation for lasting relationships and meaningful cooperation.

The PDP remains a broad national institution built and sustained by the sweat and sacrifices of patriots across the country. Let us therefore steer clear of divisive rhetoric and instead work towards internal cohesion, mutual respect, and constructive engagement.

True greatness in politics is not achieved by diminishing others but by joining hands with those who have preserved the democratic flame. Chief Wike is one of such patriots—undeniably so.
