Rajab Reflects on Years of Political Support, Says Service Has Always Been His Greatest Reward

…..Rajab Never Asked Me for a Dime Throughout My Political Struggle — Gov Ododo

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Alhaji Abubakar Rajab, has said his decades-long involvement in politics has been driven by a desire to serve humanity and promote good governance rather than personal gain.

He made the remarks while reflecting on his contributions to the political careers of several leaders, citing public acknowledgements by Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, and Deputy Governor Joel Salifu Oyibo.

According to Rajab, Governor Ododo had publicly stated: “Since the beginning of my political struggle, Rajab has never asked or taken a dime from me,” while Deputy Governor Oyibo reportedly remarked: “Rajab was the only one who supported me with money during my campaign.”

Describing the statements as independent testimonies to his commitment, Rajab said his support was never restricted to any single individual.

He explained that for more than two decades, he had quietly committed his personal resources, time and energy to supporting the political aspirations of many individuals, including members of the National Assembly, without seeking recognition, financial reward, political appointments or contracts.

According to him, his passion for helping others predates his active involvement in politics.

“My commitment to humanity did not begin in 2004. Those who knew me from my primary school days through secondary school and tertiary institution can attest that I have always found joy in helping others, irrespective of my own situation,” he said.

Rajab noted that his primary motivation had always been to ensure that the dividends of democracy reached ordinary people by supporting leaders he believed could positively impact society.

He stressed that his actions were not borne out of a lack of ambition but from a genuine commitment to improving the lives of others.

Reflecting on his experiences, Rajab said he had learned that while some people genuinely deserve support because of circumstances beyond their control, others often contribute to their own difficulties through poor choices and a refusal to accept responsibility.

He described the ability to distinguish between the two as one of the most important lessons he has learned over the years.

Despite the challenges and occasional disappointments, Rajab said he harbours no resentment, adding that his faith has taught him to serve without expecting appreciation or repayment.

Quoting the Holy Qur’an, he noted that human beings can sometimes be ungrateful, a reality he said has strengthened his resolve to continue serving selflessly.

He concluded by expressing the hope that his legacy would be defined not by material wealth but by his commitment to public service, sacrifice and the advancement of his people.

“If history remembers me, let it not be because of the wealth I accumulated, but because I chose service over self-interest, sacrifice over comfort, and the progress of my people over personal gain,” he said.
