FCT Area Councils Election: INEC Clears 478 Candidates.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cleared 478 candidates to contest for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Councils election.

Global Times Nigeria had reported that, the FCT Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), had fixed area councils chairmanship and councilorships elections for Saturday 12, February 2022.

The INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Mr Festus Okoye, disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja after the management meeting of the commission.

He recalled that the commission released the timetable and schedule of activities for the election on 31 March 2021 and that eight out of the 14 activities listed for the election have been carried out, including the conduct of primaries and nomination of candidates for the election.

“Consequently, the commission has approved the final list of 478 candidates nominated by 14 political parties to contest for 68 constituencies, made up of 110 candidates as Chairmen and Vice-Chairmen for the six Area Councils and 363 candidates for 62 Councillorship positions.

“The detailed list of the names, gender, age, academic qualification and disability (if any) of the candidates has been published in the Commission’s FCT office and uploaded on our website and social media platforms, in compliance with the requirement of Section 34 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) and for public information,” Okoye said.

Global Times Nigeria further report that two chairmanship candidates for AMAC and Abaji area councils, Alhaji Suleiman Hassan Gwagwa and Alhaji Mohammed Angulu Loko, have both filed a litigation before an Abuja High Court to challenge their substitution by the national body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) with another aspirants, after they were declared winner during the party’s primaries held on April, 23, 2021.
