APC Warned Against Imposition of Mutu in Delta
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State has been cautioned against any move to impose Hon. Nicholas Mutu as the party’s preferred candidate, amid growing concerns from grassroots supporters and stakeholders across the state.
Party faithful have expressed fears that such a decision could undermine internal democracy, weaken the party’s credibility, and create divisions capable of affecting its electoral fortunes in future contests.
Hon. Mutu, who has represented the Patani/Bomadi Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives since 1999, is one of the longest-serving lawmakers in Nigeria’s democratic history. By the next political cycle, his tenure would approach 32 years, a development that has sparked debate among constituents over the need for leadership renewal and broader representation.
Stakeholders have also raised concerns over the manner in which some political leaders are promoting his candidacy, noting that endorsements are being sought outside his immediate constituency rather than through direct engagement with the people at the grassroots.
They argue that any candidate with strong grooots support should be able to demonstrate such acceptance within their constituency without relying on external validation.
They stress that leadership credibility should be built on performance, trust, and the confidence of the electorate.
Meanwhile, sentiments within the Patani/Bomadi Federal Constituency suggest increasing resistance to any form of candidate imposition. Stakeholders note that the political landscape is evolving, with voters becoming more assertive in demanding transparency, accountability, and a greater role in determining their representatives.
Political analysts have pointed out that several lawmakers who entered the National Assembly in 1999 alongside Mutu have since moved on to higher offices, including governorship and senatorial positions, after leaving notable legacies in public service.
Amid the ongoing debate, supporters in the constituency have thrown their weight behind Rt. Hon. Basil Ganagana, describing him as a candidate capable of offering fresh ideas and inclusive leadership.
They have called on the APC leadership to ensure a level playing field by conducting free, fair, and transparent primaries, emphasizing that the party’s unity and electoral success depend largely on respecting the will of its members.
Stakeholders insist that avoiding imposition and embracing internal democracy remain critical to strengthening the party and sustaining the confidence of its supporters in Delta State.
