Zainab Sadiq Regains Freedom After Public Pressure
Journalist Zainab Sadiq, who covers the activities of activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, has regained her freedom following sustained public outcry and advocacy by human rights groups, lawyers, journalists, and civil society organisations.
Her release came after widespread pressure from Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora, with several prominent individuals and organisations calling for her freedom. Among those acknowledged for their intervention are human rights lawyer Femi Falana, Musikilu Mojeed of the International Press Institute (IPI), Barrister Marshall D. F. Abubakar, rights activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju, Amnesty International Nigeria, the Take It Back Movement, media practitioners, civil society organisations, and other concerned citizens.
Supporters described Sadiq’s release as a victory for justice, stressing that collective action and public advocacy remain powerful tools in resisting repression and defending fundamental human rights.
They also expressed appreciation to everyone who spoke out, made advocacy calls, and demanded justice, noting that the development reinforces the belief that authoritarianism cannot prevail when citizens unite in defence of democratic values and press freedom.
Global Times Nigeria reports that the release has been widely welcomed by activists and supporters, who described it as a positive step for human rights and freedom of expression in Nigeria.
