Five former Chairmen of Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, alongside their former Deputies and Secretaries, have defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The defection, which took place at Gidan Zakara Primary School on Sunday, attracted hundreds of supporters and political stakeholders from across Nasarawa West Senatorial District.

Among those who joined the SDP was former APC stakeholder in Nasarawa State, Hon. Joseph Maisamari Kaura, who led hundreds of APC supporters into the opposition party.

The development is being viewed by supporters of the SDP as a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

The ceremony also attracted the wife of former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, women leaders under the aegis of Kwaliyar Lafia, as well as members of the Fulani community from different parts of Nasarawa West Senatorial District.

The groups declared their support for the governorship ambition of Mohammed Abubakar Adamu of the SDP.

Speaking at the event, Kaura said the decision to leave the APC was driven by what he described as the absence of internal democracy and diminishing respect for party stakeholders.

He said the defectors were not merely joining the SDP as individuals but were moving with their political structures and supporters.

“We have left the APC because there is no internal democracy and no respect for stakeholders anymore. We are not just moving to the SDP, we are moving with our structures and our people to rescue Nasarawa State and to ensure the victory of Mohammed Abubakar Adamu as Governor in 2027.”

Kaura said the group was determined to strengthen the SDP across Karu Local Government and other parts of Nasarawa State.

He described the movement as a collective effort to challenge the dominance of the ruling APC in the 2027 elections.

Also speaking, the Director-General of the IGP Adamu Campaign Organization, Abdullahi Yamani, commended the people of Karu for embracing the SDP and supporting Adamu’s governorship ambition.

Yamani described Mohammed Abubakar Adamu as a credible candidate with the experience, competence and capacity required to govern Nasarawa State.

He urged APC supporters and other residents who desire a change of government to join the SDP ahead of the 2027 election.

The new members were formally received by the state leadership of the SDP, which assured them of equal opportunities and full integration into the party’s structure.
