Minimum wage: FCT teachers threatens to resume strike May, 2

Teachers of primary schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under the umbrella of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) have threatened to resume strike action if their minimum wage is not paid on or before 30th of April, 2021 by the FCT administration.

The chairman of the NUT wing in the FCT, Comrade Stephen Knabayi, stated this while speaking with newsmen shortly after the State Wing Executive Committee (SWEC) meeting of the union at the teachers house in Gwagwalada on Tuesday.

He said having discussed exhaustively on the minimum wage, the standing committee members of the union has unanimously agreed that, the affected teachers have exercised enough restraints and patience.

“Hence, the Minister should as a matter of urgency ensure the immediate implementation and payment of the arrears of the new national minimum wage to all primary school teachers in FCT on or before 30th April, 2021. And failure to effect the payment as mentioned, will have no other option than to direct all primary schools to resume the suspended strike action with effect from 2nd May, 2021,” he said.

Knabayi, said it was quite unfortunate that, despite the length of time the struggle has taken, coupled with trauma and psychological torture the union and the affected teachers has gone through during the screening, there was still unnecessary delay to pay the minimum wage.
