FAMSAS College of Health Sciences and Technology in Keffi, Nasarawa State, is preparing to host its second annual Public Health Week. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at the college premises. The theme for this year’s event is “Emerging diseases of public health concern,” highlighting the importance of addressing new health challenges. This initiative aligns with the college’s mission to train students in public health, focusing on disease prevention and community health improvement

In an interview with Global Times Nigeria correspondent at his office, Comrade Adakere Orashi Mohammed, head of the department of public health of the college, highlighted the importance of the forthcoming health event. He noted that the annual event, organized by the department, seeks to raise awareness among college students and the general public on preventive health measures, emphasizing the age-old adage, “prevention is better than cure.” He further stated, “The event’s significance lies in its capacity to amplify awareness among our students and the wider community.”

” I believe most people don’t know what is public health and it’s role in the society. So it is an avenue to create that awareness to them so that they can prioritize more on preventives measures than curiosity and make sure they provide solutions to their health issues and that is why we have lineup of activities that will showcase the difference between who is a public health worker and the general public just as the popular adage that says ‘prevention is better than cure”.He said.

Speaking further on the lineup of activities to mark the day, the Head of Department, Comrade Adakere Orashi Mohammed, elaborated that there would be lectures presented by health professionals, including Professor Amuga Gideon, who would discuss enhancing public health through effective disease surveillance systems, and Professor Akyala Ishaku, a director at Nasarawa State University Keffi, who would deliver a lecture on ‘strengthening public health systems for effective disease outbreak responses: strategies, challenges, and innovations.’

According to him, there would be a debate presentation also especially between Pharmacy students and public health students of FAMSAS and thereafter with their counterparts from the state college of health science and technology there in Keffi amongst others; all targeted at creating awareness on health related issues to the outside world.

He then used the medium and called on the students and the general public to come out in their numbers either to participate or listen carefully to the events that would be unfold to be health educated generally at the end.
