Group Urges APC to Respect Stakeholders’ Consensus in Kano Constituency

A political support group under the aegis of the Gaya Youth Democracy Supporters has called on the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to uphold the outcome of the stakeholders’ consensus process conducted for the Ajingi, Gaya and Albasu Federal Constituency.

The group also appealed to party faithful and stakeholders across the constituency to remain calm and law-abiding following the controversy surrounding the recent consensus exercise.

In a statement issued in Kano and signed by its chairman, Musa Adamu Gaya, the group urged Hon. Abdullahi Mahmud Gaya to continue pursuing redress through constitutional and democratic means over the outcome of the process.

According to the statement, the stakeholders’ consensus meeting held at the Kano State Government House produced Hon. Abdullahi Mahmud Gaya as the preferred aspirant after securing the majority of votes cast during the exercise.

The group, however, alleged that the final outcome announced failed to reflect the actual decision reached by stakeholders, describing the development as a violation of fairness and internal democratic principles within the ruling party.

It further claimed that the endorsement of the incumbent lawmaker was inconsistent with provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, as well as the APC constitution and guidelines regulating consensus arrangements.

“The decision of the majority of stakeholders was disregarded, which amounts to a breach of fairness and justice,” the statement read.

The group also cited recent comments credited to APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, in which he reportedly stated that the party recognises only direct primaries and consensus arrangements, while rejecting automatic tickets for elected public office holders.

According to the group, the issue extends beyond the personal ambition of Hon. Abdullahi Mahmud Gaya and touches on the collective interest of party members and residents across the three local government areas.

It maintained that the Electoral Act 2026 permits political parties to adopt either direct primaries or consensus arrangements, provided all cleared aspirants agree to the process.

The statement disclosed that a total of 55 votes were cast during the stakeholders’ consensus exercise, with Hon. Abdullahi Mahmud Gaya polling 33 votes to emerge with majority support.

However, the group alleged that vested interests later influenced the process, thereby undermining equity, justice and democratic values within the party.

Musa Adamu Gaya further claimed that stakeholders were not informed of the governor’s position before the final announcement was made.

The group expressed confidence in the APC’s internal dispute resolution mechanisms and reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful and lawful efforts aimed at ensuring that the will of the majority prevails.
