Abacha Died of Heart Attack, He Wasn’t Poisoned — Ex-DSS Director, Dennis Amachree Says

The controversy surrounding the death of late General Sani Abacha remains a subject of public debate, with many Nigerians still eager to uncover what they believe to be the hidden truth behind his sudden demise.

Former Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Dennis Amachree, has dismissed longstanding claims that former Nigerian Head of State, Sani Abacha, was poisoned, insisting that the late military ruler died of a heart attack.

Amachree made the clarification during a recent interview while reflecting on the circumstances surrounding Abacha’s sudden death on June 8, 1998, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

According to the former intelligence chief, there was no evidence to support widespread speculation that Abacha was assassinated through poisoning or any other form of foul play.

He stated that medical findings at the time indicated that the former military leader suffered a cardiac arrest, which ultimately led to his death.

“Abacha was not poisoned. He died of a heart attack,” Amachree said, stressing that many of the conspiracy theories that emerged after the former ruler’s death were largely fueled by rumours and public suspicion.

Following Abacha’s death, numerous theories circulated both within and outside Nigeria. While some alleged that he was poisoned by foreign agents or political rivals, others claimed he died under controversial circumstances linked to personal misconduct.

However, Amachree maintained that intelligence and security reports available to authorities at the time did not support any of those claims.

The Department of State Services, formerly known as the State Security Service (SSS), played a crucial role in monitoring national security during Abacha’s administration, making Amachree’s remarks significant in revisiting one of Nigeria’s most debated political events.
