By Yahaya Idris, Oracle of New Media

Barrister Umar Gali, a legal practitioner and founding member of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), has renewed his grassroots political engagement in Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, mobilising support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Gali, who has maintained an active presence in the political affairs of Toto, is engaging stakeholders and calling on youths, women and elders to embrace the grassroots mobilisation tradition associated with the defunct CPC as the APC prepares for another electoral contest.

The APC chieftain has been promoting support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada, Dr. Shuaib Faisal, Hon. Yerima Albasheer Mohammed and other party candidates whose political ambitions are attracting attention across Nasarawa State.

As part of his ongoing engagements, Gali was recently in Toto alongside Hon. Yerima Albasheer Mohammed for a grassroots interaction with residents, aimed at strengthening political contacts and mobilising support ahead of the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections.

His renewed participation highlights a political journey shaped by ambition, electoral disappointment and continued involvement in party activities.

Umar Gali: The Political Journey Beyond Electoral Defeat

In 2014, Barr. Umar Gali contested for the chairmanship of Toto Local Government Area. Although he did not secure the position, the outcome did not end his participation in the political process.

Rather than withdraw from public affairs, the Toto-born legal practitioner continued to engage in politics and maintain his involvement in party activities.

For Gali, political participation extends beyond occupying public office or securing electoral victories. It also encompasses the ability to remain involved, contribute to party organisation and work with other stakeholders towards shared political objectives.

His experience reflects a familiar feature of democratic politics, where aspirants who fail to win elections may continue to contribute through mobilisation, consultation and support for other candidates.

Gali’s continued engagement has consequently become a significant part of his political profile in Toto.

Why Gali Is Calling for CPC-Style Grassroots Mobilisation

With the 2027 elections approaching, Gali is urging APC members and supporters across Toto to draw lessons from the grassroots political structure associated with the defunct CPC.

He argues that effective political mobilisation requires more than slogans, social media campaigns, public declarations and occasional political gatherings.

According to the approach he advocates, party members must maintain direct contact with communities, consult traditional and community stakeholders, coordinate activities at ward level and sustain engagement with residents throughout the political process.

His message to youths centres on participation and responsibility, while women are encouraged to remain active in community mobilisation and political engagement.

Elders and experienced political stakeholders, meanwhile, are being called upon to guide younger participants, encourage unity and promote peaceful democratic participation.

The emphasis is on strengthening relationships between political organisations and the communities they seek to represent.

For Gali, the CPC’s political tradition provides a useful reference point for building grassroots networks, organising supporters and maintaining contact with voters.

Gali Expresses Confidence in Wadada, APC Candidates

During his recent engagements in Toto, Gali expressed confidence that residents would support Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada and other APC candidates in the 2027 general elections.

His position reflects his assessment of the political situation in the area, although voters will ultimately determine the outcome through their choices at the polls.

Wadada’s governorship ambition has featured prominently in political discussions across Nasarawa State, particularly in the western senatorial district. Gali’s mobilisation activities form part of the broader engagement by APC stakeholders seeking to consolidate the party’s grassroots presence.

The APC chieftain has also identified support for President Tinubu and other party candidates as part of his political engagement ahead of the next general elections.

However, political mobilisation also presents an opportunity for party leaders to engage residents on issues affecting their daily lives, including security, employment, education, infrastructure and economic welfare.

For Gali and other party stakeholders, the challenge is to translate political consultations into constructive engagement while maintaining party cohesion and peaceful competition.

Loyalty, Resilience and Political Commitment in Toto

Gali’s political story is characterised by his continued participation after his unsuccessful bid for the Toto Local Government chairmanship in 2014.

Political careers often involve setbacks, changing alliances and ambitions that do not materialise. However, political actors can remain involved through party organisation, community engagement and support for candidates whose programmes they identify with.

Gali’s political history places sustained participation and loyalty to party activities at the centre of his public profile.

As a founding member of the defunct CPC, his appeal for renewed grassroots mobilisation reflects his belief that political organisations must maintain strong connections with communities rather than depend solely on high-profile events and public declarations.

His current activities also underscore the importance of local political networks in shaping party engagement across Toto and the wider Nasarawa political landscape.

The Road to 2027

As political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, Gali is expected to remain involved in grassroots engagement and stakeholder consultations in Toto.

The extent to which such mobilisation translates into electoral support will depend on voters’ decisions, the candidates’ records, their policy proposals and the wider political environment.

For the APC, sustained engagement at ward and community levels will remain an important part of its preparations for the elections.

For Barr. Umar Gali, the journey continues beyond the political setback of 2014, with renewed involvement in party activities and calls for youths, women and elders to participate actively in the democratic process.

His story illustrates how political engagement can continue outside elective office, with grassroots organisation and community interaction providing avenues for participation in public affairs.
