Nasarawa 2027: Youth Coalition Insists on Zoning, Backs Nasarawa West for Governorship
By Yahaya Idris
A Coalition of Youth Groups from Nasarawa West Senatorial District has reaffirmed its support for rotational leadership in Nasarawa State, insisting that the zoning principle remains vital for equity, unity, and political stability ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
In a statement signed and made available to newsmen by its leaders, Comrade Jaafar Loko on behalf of the leadership of the coalition, and Comrade Samuel Kyauta Mami, Secretary of the group, the group faulted recent claims by a gubernatorial aspirant and some stakeholders suggesting that the absence of zoning would enhance merit, describing such views as misleading and contrary to the state’s long-standing political tradition.
The coalition maintained that Nasarawa State has, since its creation, operated an unwritten but widely respected arrangement of power rotation among the three senatorial districts—Nasarawa West, Nasarawa South, and Nasarawa North.
According to the group, this rotational framework has been instrumental in fostering inclusiveness, peaceful coexistence, and a sense of belonging among the diverse populations in the state.
“The governorship has moved from Nasarawa West to Nasarawa South and is currently in Nasarawa North. By this established pattern, it is clearly the turn of Nasarawa West to produce the next governor in 2027,” the statement read.
The coalition also noted that the current governor, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, has publicly endorsed the continuation of the zoning arrangement, backing Nasarawa West to succeed him in the next election cycle.
It warned that any attempt to abandon the rotational principle could undermine political cohesion and destabilize the state’s fragile balance.
The group emphasized that zoning does not negate merit but rather ensures that leadership opportunities are fairly distributed across all districts.
“We believe Nasarawa West has competent and capable individuals who can provide quality leadership while sustaining the state’s development trajectory,” the statement added.
The coalition, therefore, called on political actors, stakeholders, and aspirants to respect the established zoning tradition in the interest of peace, fairness, and unity.
It reaffirmed its commitment to advocating justice, inclusiveness, and the sustained progress of Nasarawa State.
